Deborah Birx, MD, Director of CDC’s Division of Global HIV/AIDS, was sworn in by the Senate on April 4, 2014 to serve as the new U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator for PEPFAR, an interagency U.S. government effort to fight HIV/AIDS around the world. As leader of CDC’s science-driven global HIV/AIDS activities, she provided guidance and oversight to more than 400 staff at headquarters, over 1,800 staff in the field, and to more than 45 CDC country offices in Africa, Asia, Caribbean, and Latin America. Through her specialized knowledge and decades of international experience in the field of HIV/AIDS, she promoted CDC's mission and unique strengths to achieve broader U.S. government global goals through PEPFAR.
