Only domestic accredited public or non-profit private institutions of higher education are eligible for AREA grants. The institution must also grant baccalaureate or advanced degrees in the biomedical or behavioral sciences.
?To meet the financial eligibility criteria for an AREA grant, an institution may not receive more than $6 million per year in NIH support in each of 4 of the last 7 years. Each year the NIH develops a list of institutions that are financially ineligible for AREA funding based on this criterion. See Section III of the relevant Funding Opportunity Announcement for other institutional eligibility requirements.
Institutions with Health Professional Schools or Colleges
For institutions composed of multiple academic components (i.e., schools or colleges), the criterion of financial eligibility is based on the amount of NIH research grant monies received, not by the institution (university) as a whole, but by the individual health professional school/college or by the sum of "Other Academic components" (as defined in this section) where the PD/PI has a primary appointment (e.g., School of Arts and Science, School of Medicine, College of Nursing, School of Pharmacy, etc.).
Health professional school or college: Accredited public or non-profit private school/college that grants a terminal health professional degree (e.g., MD, DDS, DO, PharmD, BSN, DVM, DrPH, OD, DPT, DC, ND, DPM).
Accreditation must be provided by a body approved for such purpose by the Secretary of Education.
Health professional schools/colleges that meet the above requirements may include schools or colleges of medicine, dentistry, osteopathy, pharmacy, nursing, veterinary medicine, public health, optometry, allied health, chiropractic, naturopathy and podiatry.
Other academic components: Once the health professional schools/colleges have been excluded, the financial eligibility of the Other Academic component is determined by the sum of all remaining schools, colleges, and free-standing institutes of the institution (university).
Neither the Other Academic component nor the School of Public Health exceeds the limit for NIH support. The School of Public Health offers education and training towards the MPH as well as research PhDs in biostatistics and epidemiology. The university is accredited and confers many bachelor and advanced degrees in biomedical/behavioral science including BA/BS in biology, MS in molecular biology, and PhD in microbiology. Conclusion: The School of Public Health does not need to be considered separately of the Other Academic component. Since the Other Academic component is eligible, individuals with primary appointments at the School of Public Health are eligible to apply.
The Other Academic component at the university is financially ineligible. The School of Public Health does not exceed the limit for NIH support. The School of Public Health offers training and education towards the DrPH. The School of Public Health is accredited and confers the DrPH. Conclusion: The School of Public Health can be considered separately from the Other Academic component, so it is eligible.
The Other Academic component at the university is financially ineligible. The School of Public Health does not exceed the limit for NIH support. The School of Public Health offers training and education towards the DrPH. The DrPH is conferred by the University, not the School of Public Health. Conclusion: The School of Public Health cannot be considered separately from the Other Academic component, so it is ineligible.
The Other Academic component at the university is financially ineligible. The School of Public Health does not exceed the limit for NIH support. The School of Public Health confers the MPH as well as research PhDs in biostatistics and epidemiology. Conclusion: Since these are not terminal health professional degrees, the School of Public Health cannot be considered separately from the Other Academic component. It is ineligible.
University – Main Campus exceeds the financial limit, and University – Branch Campus does not. University – Branch Campus and University – Main Campus are the same legal entity. Conclusion: University – Branch Campus is not eligible.
University – Main Campus exceeds the financial limit, and University – Branch Campus does not. University – Branch Campus offers education and training towards the BS in dental hygiene, BA in psychology, and BS/BA in biology. All degrees are conferred by University – Main Campus. University – Main Campus is accredited for all degrees. Conclusion: University – Branch Campus is not eligible.
University – Main Campus exceeds the financial limit, and University – Branch Campus does not. University – Branch Campus confers the AS in dental hygiene, cytotechnology, and biology. For the University system, all bachelor, masters, and doctorate degrees are conferred only at the University – Main Campus. Conclusion: University – Branch Campus is not eligible.
University – Main Campus exceeds the financial limit, and University – Branch Campus does not. University – Branch Campus is a separate legal entity. University – Branch Campus confers the BS in dental hygiene, BA in psychology, and BS/BA in biology. University – Branch Campus itself is accredited. Conclusion: University – Branch Campus is eligible; applications must be submitted with University – Branch Campus as the applicant institution.
University School of Medicine – Main Campus exceeds the financial limit, and University School of Medicine - Branch Campus does not. University School of Medicine – Branch Campus is a separate legal entity. University School of Medicine - Branch Campus confers the M.D. University School of Medicine – Branch Campus itself is accredited. Conclusion: University School of Medicine – Branch Campus is eligible; applications must be submitted with University School of Medicine – Branch Campus as the applicant institution.
Institutions Ineligible for AREA Grants
The following is a list of institutions, and their relevant components (defined above), that are currently financially ineligible to apply for AREA funding. This list is updated annually in April. An application from an institution that becomes ineligible after the application is submitted will remain under review and in consideration for funding.
