This report describes an approach and guiding principles, based on nutritional science, for developing nutrition standards for foods and beverages (other than federally reimbursable meals and snacks) that are offered in schools. The report discusses the school environment and addresses nutrition-related health concerns, dietary intakes, and eating behaviors of children and adolescents. Recommendations are provided for nutrition standards for competitive foods sold in schools. An appendix lists current standards by states.
