Description of Resource:
The 2012 Institute of Medicine (IOM) Report “Epilepsy Across the Spectrum” provides an independent review of the public health dimensions of the epilepsies following institutional standards set for objectivity and evidence. The IOM focused on reviewing available evidence around public health surveillance and data collection; population and public health research; health policy, health care, and human services; and education for people with the disorder and their families, health care providers, and the public. Based on population and epidemiologic studies, about 1 in 26 or 2 million persons in the United States have epilepsy, and about 150,000 new cases are diagnosed annually. The report highlights evidence-based programs for epilepsy self-management in adults and children and for treatment of epilepsy and co-morbidities. It offers numerous recommended approaches to improving access to care and quality of life in people with epilepsy.
