Screen to Save: NCI Colorectal Cancer Outreach and Screening Initiative
Increasing colorectalscreening rates is one of the 10 recommendations of the Blue Ribbon Panel for the Cancer Moonshot and endorsed by the National Cancer Advisory Board. In response to these recommendations, the NCI Center to Reduce Cancer Health Disparities (CRCHD) launched the national Screen to Save (S2S): NCI Colorectal Cancer Outreach and Screening Initiative.
Screen to Save aims to increase colorectal cancer screening rates among men and women age 50 and older from racially and ethnically diverse communities and in rural areas, including: American Indians and Alaskan Natives, Asians, Blacks/African Americans, Hispanics/Latinos, and Native Hawaiians and other Pacific Islanders.
Through Screen to Save, community health educators funded by the NCI’s National Outreach Network (NON) and Partnerships to Advance Cancer Health Equity (PACHE), will provide culturally-tailored, evidence-based colorectal cancer information, education, and screening resources within racially and ethnically diverse and rural communities nationwide.
Collaboration
Located at NCI-designated Cancer Centers, community health educators will work with a diverse partner network on national, regional, and community levels to deliver NCI-approved colorectal cancer screening information to communities who need it the most.
Screen to Save, in collaboration with the Comprehensive Cancer Control National Partnership, will identify and provide local communities with evidence-based resources to promote CRC screening awareness and access to care.
The Geographic Management of Cancer Health Disparities Program’s (GMaP) Regional Coordinating Directors will also play a key role in assisting the community health educators in identifying and connecting with colorectal cancer screening information and resources within their regions.
Education and Outreach Activities
Tailored education and outreach activities will take place throughout the year in diverse communities across the country, and will be combined with additional community engagements during Colorectal Cancer Awareness month in March 2017.
Detailed assessments conducted throughout the initiative will be used to track and monitor progress. An overall assessment of Screen to Save will also be undertaken to measure the effects of the education and outreach efforts on increasing knowledge, awareness and colorectal screening behaviors among racially and ethnically diverse and rural communities.
