New CFSAN Center Director Announced

On November 10, 2014, FDA announced a change in leadership at the Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (CFSAN). In January 2015, Dr. Susan T. Mayne will take the reins from Michael M. Landa, who is retiring after more than four years leading the Center, providing critical leadership on major food safety and nutrition initiatives.

FDA Finalizes Menu and Vending Machine Calorie Labeling Rules

On November 25, 2014, FDA finalized two rules requiring that calorie information be listed on menus and menu boards in chain restaurants, similar retail food establishments and vending machines with 20 or more locations to provide consumers with more nutritional information about the foods they eat outside of the home. The rules are required by the 2010 Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.

Delay in Verification Activities for Final Rule on Modernization of Poultry

The final rule on modernization of poultry inspection requires that poultry slaughter establishments, other than those that slaughter ratites, develop, implement, and maintain written procedures to prevent contamination of carcasses and parts by enteric pathogens and fecal contamination throughout the entire slaughter and dressing operation and demonstrate this control through microbiological sampling and testing. The rule also requires that poultry slaughter establishments develop, implement, and maintain written procedures to ensure that carcasses with visible fecal contamination do not enter the chiller.

FSIS will not begin verifying that large establishments meet the new requirements until

December 1, 2014, according to the instructions FSIS issued on November 14, 2014.

FDA Published Updated Guidance for Industry on Food Facility Registration

FDA announced the availability of a guidance for industry entitled Questions and Answers Regarding Food Facility Registration (Sixth Edition). The guidance includes one new question and answer in addition to the questions and answers in the Fifth Edition of the guidance document, which is being added in light of an ongoing rulemaking under the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) that proposes to make certain changes to the definition of the term farm in 21 CFR 1.227.

FSIS: Hog HIMP Evaluation Posted

FSIS has posted on its website the Market Hog HIMP Evaluation. The objective of this report is to evaluate FSIS’ inspection findings in market hog slaughter establishments participating in the Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) Inspection Models Project (HIMP) and to determine whether the HIMP inspection system is performing as well as the existing inspection system.
