Health Profession Opportunity Grants Awarded

October 8, 2015

The HPOG program is designed to match careers in a growing field with people who are eager to fill them.  HPOG participants get onto a career pathway with the help of higher education and supportive services. Some of the most common education programs prepare students to become nurses, medical assistants, home health aides and pharmacy technicians.  The program also provides supportive services to help participants complete their education and move into employment.  Supportive services include child care, tutoring, tuition assistance, transportation assistance and help finding a job.

Some HPOG participants are employed in low-paying jobs when they enter the program, but get higher wages after completing their healthcare education.

Quick Facts

  • Run by HHS’ Administration for Children and Families, the HPOG program provides education and training to Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) recipients and other low-income individuals for high-demand careers in health care that pay well.
  • Since the program began in 2010, over 32,000 HPOG participants have enrolled in health care occupational training and more than 16,000 participants have become employed in a health care occupation.
  • On average, incumbent workers receive a wage increase of $4.80 upon completion of a healthcare training through HPOG.
