Each year, on May 31, the global tobacco control and prevention community celebrates World No Tobacco Day (WNTD), an annual awareness event that draws worldwide attention to the tobacco epidemic and highlights the need for effective policies to reduce tobacco use. This year, the World Health Organization and its partners are calling upon countries to raise taxes on tobacco products. This recommendation is among several actions also identified in the 2014 Surgeon General’s Report—The Health Consequences of Smoking: 50 Years of Progress—to more quickly and dramatically reduce tobacco use.
