Preventing Chronic Disease | An Algorithm That IdentifiesCoronary and Heart Failure Events in the Electronic Health Record -CDC |
The advent of universal health care coverage in the United States and the use of electronic health records can make the medical record a disease surveillance tool. The objective of our study was to identify criteria that accurately categorize acute coronary and heart failure events by using electronic health record data exclusively so that the medical record can be used for surveillance without manual record review. |

Director's Briefing: SARS -- 10 Years Later |
It has been 10 years since the global outbreak of SARS, which killed hundreds of people and cost tens of billions of dollars. In this Director's Briefing video, CDC Director Dr. Tom Frieden talks about how we have made progress in disease detection since SARS; however, we remain at risk from global health threats, including emerging and drug-resistant microbes. Next-generation tools like molecular sequencing and bioinformatics can help us rapidly identify and stop these killer microbes before they spread, but we must act now.
